Increasing School Engagement

Goal 4: To increase commitment to school by improving student and parental engagement as measured by:

  • Year 5/6 students reporting on Attitudes to school survey
  • School attendance rates Year 5/6 2018 and 2019
  • CTC youth survey from the current baseline measurement of 33.3% Year 5 and 51.72% Year 6 in 2015 to 25% Year 5 and 38% Year 6 by 2019.

One on One Parenting Support

  • Parents of primary and secondary students across the Alpine Shire

  • September 2017—December 2017
  • Myrtleford – 4 sessions
  • Mount Beauty – 4 sessions
  • Bright & Porepunkah – 4 sessions
  • Child First & Gateway Health Parenting practitioners
  • School newsletters and take-home notes

Reinforcing and supporting schools programs

Reinforcing and supporting programs initiated by schools such as;

  • The Resilience Project
  • The Smart Generation
  • Parenting support

Results

  • Rates of low commitment to school increase with increasing year level from Year 5 (46.2%) to Year 9 (79.1%)
  •  Rates of suspension from school have tended to decrease for Year 5, 7 and 9 students since 2009
  • Parental attitudes favourable to drug use has continued to decrease since 2009 for Year 9 students
  • Most protective factors for students remain high for young people living in the Alpine Shire
