Celebrating diversity and inclusion

15 June 2021

Alpine Health have encouraged staff to dress in their best rainbow attire this week to celebrate and promote awareness of Pride Month and the LGBTIQA+ communities. Other activities during the month of June include proudly wearing a rainbow badge, starting respectful and inclusive conversations with staff, patients, clients and residents and leading or supporting Pride activities with residents or clients.

Alpine Health CEO, Nick Shaw said 'Our Pride Month activities are part of broader organisational diversity and inclusion work within Alpine Health. This work covers diversity, inclusion, and gender equality, which helps us to see and better understand the many layers of disadvantage that some groups of people experience. One aspect of this is to create a workforce that is genuinely inclusive and better reflects the diversity of the communities we serve'.

Partnering with Consumers Officer Turi Berg said ' Alpine Health is also committed to delivering person-centred care across all areas. An essential part of this care is to actively engage in inclusive and respectful conversations with all patients, clients, residents and carers. This is because LGBTIQA+ communities and individuals are extremely diverse and often face a number of health and social inclusion issues. These barriers may prevent LGBTIQA+ people from using critical services which can result in poorer health and wellbeing outcomes than their non-LGBTIQA+ peers.

Recognising and valuing differences and diversity is therefore fundamental in providing an equitable and supportive environment for both staff and the community' she said.
