Alpine Health have commissioned pieces of Aboriginal artwork for each of our hospital sites. The first piece was unveiled at Bright Hospital in August, with the new piece ‘Our Beautiful Gunni (Spirit) Country’ revealed at Mt Beauty on Thursday 5th December.

The artwork was created by The Aboriginal Women’s Wellbeing Group from Wodonga. They worked with Alpine Health’s Mt Beauty Community and Health Advisory Group to develop a piece of art that reflects both the Aboriginal connection to Country and the values of the broader Mt Beauty community. This artwork is now on display in the foyer of the Mt Beauty Hospital.

About ‘Our Beautiful Gunni (Spirit) Country’

The artwork shows the beauty of the Country, from the high mountains and down through the plains.

You can see the beautiful Bogong moths as they travel across Mt Bogong under the fresh sun. The sacred twin ghost gums guide them safely on their journey. Bungala, the sacred eagle bird, glides through the skies. The beautiful black cockatoo sits high above the plains.

The East and West Kiewa Rivers replenish the lands they flow through - Falls Creek, Bogong Village and Mount Beauty - as if they are the protectors and providers of our people. The twin rivers stream into one and become the Kiewa River, which flows passed Mount Emu and provides nourishment to the land and the grazing kangaroos.

Along the beautiful plains the wonders of the ghost gums are evident. Tawonga, Dederang, Myrtleford and Wodonga are graced by the wonders of the gifts that the land has given us. The goannas and wombats lay lazily in the sun in awe of this beautiful Country.

This is what our Gunnis have given us; it’s important to look at land and Country and how we as people need it to stay well.
